Mes parents entretenaient des superstitions concernant les chats noirs. S’ils avaient pu voir Shadow, le chat de notre ami prêtre et son épouse, Peggy. Ils habitaient derrière l’église et Shadow se balladaient à tout bout de champ dans le cimetière, irrévérant, somnolant dans des poses tirées de l’art du cirque en équilibre sur les pierres tombales. Ces amis sont aussi collectionneurs d’antiquités, ce qui fait de leur maison un lieu extraordinaire pour prendre des photos, cette fois-ci du chat, sur leur divan d’un joli imprimé fleuri, enjolivé d’une couverture de laine… où flânait notre chat vedette, Shadow.

My parents firmly believed in their black cat superstitions; enough to turn the car around to avoid having it cross our path… I wish they could have seen Shadow. He belonged to my friend Peggy and her husband, a priest who lived next to the church and the cemetery. The cat was forever sunning himself on the back of the tombstones in compromising poses, performing feats of balance, or strolling irreverently among the graves as though he owned the place. I found him inside, on a couch with a lovely floral fabric, on which there was a woolen blanket…a cat attraction. I saw a combination of patterns, textures and colours that I love and a perfect subject to paint!
